This is bad news: sea star wasting disease has popped up along the Oregon coast over the last two weeks, according to reports.
It seems to be having a particularly dramatic effect on purple ochre sea stars there, which are a keystone species that keeps other shellfish populations under control. So losing them would throw the intertidal ecosystem out of balance.
